What to Do in Charming Nafplio
Exploring Nafplio will take you on a journey through time where each cobblestone street and monument tells stories of the past. Only a short drive from Athens, Nafplio is the perfect day or weekend trip and will captivate you with its historic charm.
The main draw is that you get to experience small town Greek charm similar to what you would find on the islands without having to take a ferry. It’s also extremely walkable and a photographer’s paradise. The Old Town streets are picturesque and covered with ivy and brilliant Bougainvillea. The castle is medieval with pastel-colored stone and brilliant cliff views on the way up. Lastly, there are breathtaking views of the sea from established promenades set up in the town below.
By visiting Nafplio, you are getting a wonderful introduction to the Peloponnese – a historic and picturesque peninsula in southern Greece, renowned for its ancient ruins, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural heritage.

Nafplio's History
Originally known as Nauplion, the town traces its origins back to ancient times, when it served as a strategic seaport for the Mycenaean civilization. Over the centuries, Nafplio flourished under the rule of various powers, including the Venetians, Ottomans, and Byzantines, each leaving behind architectural marvels and cultural influences that still resonate today.
In the 19th century, Nafplio played a pivotal role in Greece's fight for independence, serving as the country's first capital before Athens took over this role. The rich history is reflected in the town's eclectic architecture, from its elegant neoclassical buildings to its imposing fortresses, providing a fascinating glimpse into Nafplio's past.
Getting Around
Nafplio is conveniently located just a couple of hours' drive from Athens, making it an ideal destination for a day trip or a weekend getaway. If you prefer public transportation, regular buses connect Athens to Nafplio, offering a scenic journey through the Greek countryside. Alternatively, you can inexpensively rent a car.
Importantly, the city is SO small and walkable. TIP! If you bring a car, plan to park at the Port (you can easily find it on google maps) and you will be able to walk everywhere of interest within 10-20 minutes of walking. Instead of spending time navigating where to go for activities, you can spend that time enjoying the city!
I recommend spending 1-2 days in Nafplio and, if you have more time, explore the ruins close by or head to other notable destinations in the Peloponnese such as magnificent Monemvasia.
What to do in Nafplio
Explore the Old Town:
Wander through the cobbled streets of Nafplio's Old Town, where every corner has a new architectural marvel or hidden gem. There are elegant neoclassical buildings, quaint cafes, and charming boutiques with handmade crafts that line the narrow alleys, offering a glimpse into the town's vibrant past.
Visit Palamidi Fortress:
Perched atop a hill overlooking the town, Palamidi Fortress is a landmark that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The castle is perched on a steep hill and is reached by a steep climb of 999 steps (some say it's slightly less), but you can also drive to the top. The climb took us about 45 minutes and there are plenty of places to stop and rest and take in the scenery. From the ramparts and watchtowers, there are stunning panoramic views of the town and sea! It's the best view in Nafplio and it just takes a little workout to get there.
In fact, the epic view is the reason the castle was built. The Venetians from Venice, Italy constructed the castle in the early 1700s on the hill of Palamidi to strengthen the fortifications of Nafplio and protect the city from potential invasions. The construction of Palamidi Castle was part of a larger defensive strategy to safeguard Venetian interests and maintain control over the region. The castle's strategic location provided a vantage point for monitoring maritime activities and defending against enemy attacks!

Stroll Along Arvanitia Promenade:
For sunset, take a leisurely stroll along the Arvanitia Promenade, a picturesque waterfront stone path that offers stunning views of the sea and the rugged coastline. Lined with shady trees and dotted with secluded coves, it’s perfect for a romantic evening stroll or a refreshing morning jog.
Note: the cascading cliff is covered with prickly pear. We noticed a few had dropped into the water so beware the pear!
Tip: Keep walking on the stone path until you come across the magical stone arches. Enjoy the view or take your sunset photos here. Both sides of the Promenade offer a short walk back to the Old Town.
Experience Peloponnesian Food:
No visit to Nafplio would be complete without savoring the local gastronomic delights. As you dine alfresco amidst ancient ruins and Venetian architecture, you'll experience not just a meal but a celebration of Peloponnesian culture.
Aiolos Tavern - This is one famous Greek taverna you must visit for lunch or dinner. It is located in the Old Town down one of the charming alleys. From savory moussaka and succulent souvlaki to freshly caught seafood and tangy feta cheese, every dish tells a story of the land and sea.
Discover Ancient Mycenae or Epidaurus Close By:
Just a short drive from Nafplio lies the ancient citadel of Mycenae, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Explore the ruins of the legendary Lion Gate, the royal tombs, and the impressive Cyclopean walls, and immerse yourself in the fascinating history of this ancient civilization.
We also used our car to stop at the Ancient City of Epidaurus on the way back to Athens and were impressed with its desolate, peaceful beach and small restaurants (Poseidon Restaurant for example) in the port looking out over the water. Warning: you will be dining with lots of kitties!!
On the way to Epidaurus from Nafplio, consider stopping at Stork Restaurant & Viewing Point for sweeping views of the city you're about to visit.
Hotel Recommendations
If it’s your first time in Nafplio, I highly recommend staying in the Old Town. If you can, book one of the many boutique hotels that line those charming streets. Since there are usually only a few rooms, they are more charming and unique and many times offer a small balcony to people watch on the alleys below or look up at the castle above. These places are available on booking.com.
Hotel Amymone and Adiandi - I stayed here my first time and loved it. It’s a boutique hotel across from the upscale and rustic restaurant Wild Duck where you won’t need to worry about visiting for dinner because it’s where the hotel will serve your breakfast!
